Key role purpose

The key purpose of this role is to safely operate and maintain defined Technical Services plants and related processes in order to achieve optimal effectiveness.

Key outputs and responsibilities

Plant and process operations

The Operator will be responsible for operating equipment and plants in Technical Services process areas according to VPO standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Optimizing plant and process performance where appropriate.
  • Operating the Technical Services plant and process.
  • Providing utilities to departments as per required standards.
  • Performing housekeeping tasks.
  • Applying 5S principles.
  • Following safe work practices.
  • Identifying and correcting unsafe work practices.
  • Supporting the creation, drafting, and documentation of standard work procedures, including:
    • Quick fix routines.
    • Problem-solving procedures.

Quality control and analysis

The Operator will be required to carry out quality checks and analysis to ensure standards are maintained.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out the required quality checks and analyses.
  • Recording quality results on the appropriate information system.
  • Applying appropriate problem-solving techniques where quality problems arise, including:
    • 5 WHY.
    • Quick fix routines.
  • Escalating any identified or unresolved problems to the Line Manager.

Communication and team participation

The role requires active participation in team communication and performance review processes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Actively participating in meetings and PI reviews.
  • Fully understanding team goals.
  • Participating in team goal review sessions.
  • Making use of relevant communication media, such as the shift logbook, to stay informed and inform others of issues.
  • Completing the required handover to incoming shift team members.
  • Ensuring that issues relating to plant performance and quality are communicated during shift handover.
  • Completing autonomous operations tasks and problem-solving activities.

Requirements

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 9 months on-the-job training.
  • Experience within the FMCG industry will be an added advantage.
  • Understanding of VPO principles.
