Responsibilities
The Senior Safety Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify hazards and propose corrective actions.
- Ensure the effective communication of safety policies and procedures across the workforce.
- Enforce Safety Leading Indicators at the level of departmental leadership, including:
- Fatal Risk Critical Control Verifications
- Safety Leadership Interactions
- Task Observations
- Risk Management
- Hazard Management
- Safety Trainings
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and environmental laws, such as OSHA, Fire Rescue, and MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration).
- Stay current with updates to safety laws, regulations, and industry standards, integrating changes into operational protocols as necessary.
- Design and deliver safety training programs for all employees, including hazard awareness, emergency procedures, and safety equipment use.
- Lead new employee safety orientation and conduct regular refresher courses for all levels of staff.
- Lead ICAM or 5WHY investigations into workplace accidents and safety incidents, ensuring thorough analysis and implementation of preventive measures.
- Regularly conduct workplace hazard analysis, identifying potential risks in mining operations, including equipment, chemicals, and environmental factors.
- Propose strategies to eliminate or minimize risks, ensuring that safety protocols are actively enforced.
- Ensure the Journey to Zero roadmap is owned by individual HODs by consistently ensuring safety standards are implemented in each department.
- Foster a proactive safety culture within the organization by encouraging staff involvement in safety initiatives and ensuring open communication about safety concerns.
- Promote safety awareness at all levels of the organization through safety meetings, campaigns, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Develop and test emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fires, chemical spills, and mine collapses.
- Ensure that emergency equipment is well-maintained and all staff are trained in emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of safety audits, inspections, incident investigations, and safety training activities.
- Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management, identifying trends and recommending improvements.
Qualification requirements
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, Advanced Diploma, or equivalent experience.
- Certification in safety management, such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or similar certifications, is highly preferred.
Experience and competencies needed
Applicants should have the following experience and competencies:
- Extensive experience, typically 5+ years, in safety management within the mining or heavy industry sector.
- Underground, process plant, and open pit operation experience.
- Adequate driving competence in a mining environment.
- Multi-skilled experience in different mining operation activities.

About the team
The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania, in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits:
- Gokona, which is an underground deposit.
- Nyabirama, which is an open pit deposit.
The process plant has the capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
