Position
Tradesperson 1 – Mechanic
Objective of the role
The Tradesperson 1 – Mechanic will:
- Execute mechanical work safely and responsibly within LME, including preventive maintenance, repairs and breakdown recovery for LME mobile and stationary equipment.
- Perform maintenance primarily in the light vehicle section under the supervision of the Light Vehicle Supervisor and Senior Supervisor.
- Support the maintenance team in meeting the required standards and client demand across light vehicles, light trucks, auxiliary equipment and underground equipment, as assigned.
Role accountabilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Observe all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures relevant to the job, conduct mini risk assessments before beginning work and use all required permits.
- Use the correct tooling at all times and immediately tag out and report any unsafe equipment.
- Report all incidents immediately and participate in investigations and remediation activities.
- Maintain good housekeeping and take proper care of assigned personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Carry out routine inspections, maintenance and repairs of LME equipment, with a primary focus on panel beating, body repair, welding and fabrication.
- Execute planned and unplanned light vehicle maintenance tasks accurately and on time.
- Troubleshoot faults and complete repairs as required.
- Report any lost or damaged tooling and any attempted theft observed in the workshop.
- Adhere to all work procedures established within the LME section and across the company.
- Ensure that all communications and procedures have been read, understood and acknowledged.
- Complete assigned tasks during each shift according to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards.
- Provide timely disclosure to the manager when accountabilities cannot be met or can be met using fewer resources.
- Provide an early warning to the Senior Supervisor when assigned tasks cannot be completed to the correct standard within the allowed time.
- Request assistance when unsure about an assigned task.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on light vehicles to a high standard to meet client demand.
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity and comply with company values.
- Clearly communicate the company’s Safety value and follow through on safety improvement actions.
- Ensure that work is properly planned and adequately resourced and that hazards are identified and controlled.
- Lead by example and promote openness, trust, fair treatment and mutual respect.
Role requirements
Education and qualifications
Applicants must possess the following:
- Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE).
- VETA Trade Test Certificate Grade One/Level Three in Mechanics.
- Full Technician Certificate (FTC) in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience
Applicants must have:
- At least five years of experience in light vehicle maintenance, preferably involving Toyota Land Cruiser models, and the ability to work in a mining environment.
- The ability to troubleshoot problems affecting Toyota Land Cruisers and other light vehicle models.
- Knowledge of the procedures for repairing and maintaining all HME/LME mining equipment.
- Knowledge of 1HZ, 2KD, 1KD and VDJ 200 engine overhauls, valve setting and timing.
- The skills and knowledge required to conduct component change-outs on light vehicles.
- Sound knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental issues and procedures.
- A certificate of service demonstrating experience in panel beating, body repair, welding and fabrication of LME equipment.
Knowledge and skills
The successful candidate must be:
- Physically and mentally fit and hardworking.
- Able to work with minimum supervision.
- Equipped with good communication skills and committed to delivering results.
- Able to work under pressure.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications.
- Competent in driving, with a valid Tanzanian driving licence and the ability to drive within a mining environment.
- Able to read and understand maintenance manuals.
- Able to maintain daily logs and records, with knowledge of proper record-keeping practices.
- Equipped with effective time-management skills.
- Knowledgeable about procedures for repairing and maintaining a wide range of mobile and stationary equipment.
- Knowledgeable about preventive and predictive maintenance schedules and programmes for mobile and stationary equipment.
- Able to repair and maintain a wide range of mobile and stationary equipment.
