Job purpose
The key purpose of this role is to coordinate, coach, and control the activities of maintenance teams in the production environment.
The Maintenance Controller will also provide specialist technical advice to ensure maximum equipment availability and improved plant performance.
Key roles and responsibilities
Team leadership and performance management
The Maintenance Controller will be responsible for leading, supporting, and developing maintenance teams to ensure effective delivery of maintenance activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and monitor team goals.
- Support and coach team members.
- Conduct SKAP assessments for team members.
- Delegate and monitor work activities.
- Manage personal development and performance.
- Complete one-on-one meetings.
- Manage SKAP processes.
- Support recruitment management.
- Review engagement survey results.
- Develop artisans and machine specialists.
- Ensure development plans are in place.
Maintenance planning and execution
The role requires effective planning, coordination, and execution of maintenance activities to improve machine reliability and reduce breakdowns.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain machines and repair breakdowns.
- Locate plant, equipment, spares, and relevant documentation or systems.
- Plan and prepare maintenance jobs.
- Carry out repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure maintenance tools are in good working order.
- Continuously improve and optimize plant, process equipment, and systems.
- Operate plant and process equipment where required.
- Ensure effective process controls are in place.
Safety, health, and environmental compliance
The Maintenance Controller will be expected to maintain a safe and healthy working environment and ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental procedures.
Responsibilities include:
- Enforce and maintain safe work areas.
- Maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
- Implement and comply with safety, health, and environmental legislation and procedures.
- Maintain safety and 5S standards.
- Identify and close unsafe practices through SIOs.
- Conduct safety inspections.
- Audit safe maintenance practices.
- Ensure adherence to PPE policies.
Continuous improvement and problem-solving
The successful candidate will support continuous improvement initiatives and participate in solving operational and maintenance-related problems.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage continuous improvement projects.
- Solve situational problems.
- Conduct audits.
- Participate in S Plan activities.
- Conduct loss and waste analysis for the top three machines.
- Ensure artisan workstations are aligned to address identified problem areas.
Plant reliability and performance
The role will contribute to improved plant reliability, packaging efficiencies, product quality, and overall plant performance.
Responsibilities include:
- Improve plant reliability.
- Support packaging efficiencies.
- Monitor plant performance.
- Support product quality.
- Monitor maintenance KPIs and PIs.
- Implement and sustain autonomous operations according to plan.
- Ensure GOP compliance.
- Support VPO implementation.
Budgeting and CAPEX management
The Maintenance Controller will support maintenance budget preparation and cost control.
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare the ZBB/VIC maintenance budget.
- Prepare the allocated area ZBB/VIC maintenance budget.
- Comply with the approved budget.
- Highlight risk areas ahead of time.
- Identify CAPEX UPP opportunities that need to be addressed.

Minimum requirements
Candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Machine Specialist qualification or experience in Mechanical.
- FTC or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- BSc in Mechanical Engineering.
- Two to three years of mechanical planning experience.
