About the trainee programme

The Agronomy Technician Trainee position is a one-year programme designed to provide extension services to farmers through field days and direct engagement at each critical crop growth and production stage.

The trainees will conduct regular farmer visits to ensure that all farmers receive the support recommended under the Minimum Agricultural Standards (MAS). This will help JTI prepare accurate projections of expected production volumes and maximize the production and delivery of quality tobacco.

Key responsibilities

Successful trainees will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring crop performance and farmers’ compliance with recommended agronomic practices.
  • Identifying field challenges early and providing timely technical support or escalating issues when necessary.
  • Implementing agroforestry, barn and furnace initiatives according to the approved plan.
  • Ensuring accurate collection of data for uploading into the relevant systems.
  • Preparing weekly and monthly written reports covering all farmers.
  • Establishing the required grower base within the allocated growing area to meet JTI’s contracting volume and quality requirements.
  • Supporting the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.
  • Supporting initiatives aimed at eliminating child labour and strengthening the well-being of growers and their communities.
  • Adhering to Information Management System (IMS) standards and internal controls to ensure accurate record-keeping, compliance and reliable reporting.
  • Ensuring adherence to crop calendar standards by monitoring and supporting the timely implementation of all crop production activities throughout the growing season.
  • Promoting and implementing regenerative agriculture practices that:
    • Enhance soil health.
    • Improve water-use efficiency.
    • Increase biodiversity.
    • Strengthen climate resilience.
    • Contribute to long-term agricultural sustainability.

Qualifications and requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A university degree in Agriculture, Extension Services or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in Swahili.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • The ability to ride a motorcycle.
  • A valid motorcycle driving licence.

Practical field experience gained through an internship in the tobacco industry will be an added advantage.
